Health and Safety Policy for Gardeners Aperfield
Gardeners Aperfield is committed to providing professional gardening services in a way that protects the health, safety and welfare of our employees, contractors, clients, visitors and members of the public. We recognise that gardening work involves physical activity, machinery, tools and exposure to outdoor environments, and we manage these risks through careful planning, training and supervision.
This policy sets out our approach to health and safety across all gardening and grounds maintenance activities carried out by Gardeners Aperfield.
Our Health and Safety Responsibilities
Gardeners Aperfield accepts overall responsibility for managing health and safety within the business. Management is responsible for providing safe systems of work, appropriate equipment, adequate information and training, and effective supervision.
Every employee and contractor also has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. All team members must follow safety procedures, use equipment correctly and report hazards or incidents without delay.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Before starting work at any garden or grounds, we assess potential risks and take appropriate measures to control them. This includes considering the layout of the site, access and exit points, terrain, weather conditions, nearby roads, public pathways and the presence of children, pets or vulnerable persons.
We develop safe working practices for typical gardening tasks including grass cutting, hedge trimming, pruning, planting, weed control, green waste handling, use of ladders, and operation of powered tools and machinery. Where a task presents significant risk, work will only proceed once suitable controls are in place, such as barriers, signage, personal protective equipment or changes to the method of work.
Training, Supervision and Competence
All Gardeners Aperfield staff receive induction training covering general health and safety, safe use of tools and machinery, manual handling, safe driving and awareness of risks in outdoor environments. Additional training is provided for specialised activities such as the use of powered cutting equipment and handling of horticultural products.
New or less experienced employees work under appropriate supervision until they are assessed as competent for specific tasks. Ongoing refresher training and toolbox talks are used to reinforce safe behaviour and to share lessons learned from incidents or near misses.
Equipment, Tools and Machinery
We provide and maintain tools and machinery that are suitable for professional gardening work and safe for their intended use. Equipment is inspected regularly, serviced as recommended by manufacturers and removed from use immediately if found to be defective or unsafe.
Only trained and authorised personnel may use powered equipment such as lawn mowers, hedge trimmers, chainsaws, blowers and similar machinery. Guards, safety switches and other protective devices must never be removed or bypassed. Tools are transported and stored securely to prevent injury or unauthorised use.
Personal Protective Equipment
Gardeners Aperfield supplies appropriate personal protective equipment for gardening tasks, which may include safety footwear, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, high visibility garments, respiratory protection and weather-appropriate clothing.
All team members are required to wear the specified protective equipment for each task and to keep it in good condition. Damaged or worn items must be reported and replaced as necessary.
Chemicals, Substances and Environmental Hazards
Where horticultural treatments, fertilisers or other substances are used, we follow product instructions and control measures identified in relevant safety information. Only trained personnel handle such substances, and quantities are kept to the minimum necessary for the work.
We take care to protect plants, wildlife, watercourses, neighbouring properties and the wider environment from contamination or damage. Waste, including green waste and packaging, is managed responsibly and removed from sites where agreed.
Manual Handling and Physical Wellbeing
Gardening work can involve lifting, carrying, digging and repetitive movements. Gardeners Aperfield encourages safe manual handling techniques at all times to reduce the risk of strains and other musculoskeletal injuries.
Where practical, we use mechanical aids, team lifting or alternative methods to move heavy loads such as soil, aggregates, bags, pots and machinery. Staff are encouraged to take appropriate rest breaks, remain hydrated in hot weather and wear suitable clothing for changing outdoor conditions.
Working Around Clients and the Public
Our teams take particular care when working in residential gardens or shared outdoor spaces. We plan activities to minimise disturbance and risk to clients, neighbours, visitors and members of the public.
Where necessary, we use warning signs, barriers or temporary exclusion zones around active work areas, especially when using powered equipment or working near pathways and entrances. Tools and materials are kept tidy to prevent slips, trips and falls, and work areas are left safe and orderly at the end of each job.
Incidents, Near Misses and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, injuries, near misses and cases of property damage occurring during Gardeners Aperfield activities must be reported promptly to management. We record each incident, investigate where appropriate and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
Employees are briefed on emergency arrangements including first aid, fire safety and what to do in the event of a serious incident. Work may be stopped immediately if there is any concern that conditions are unsafe.
Continuous Improvement and Review
Gardeners Aperfield is committed to continuous improvement in health and safety. We review this policy regularly and update it in light of changes in our operations, industry guidance or identified risks.
We welcome feedback from employees, clients and other stakeholders on health and safety matters and use this information to refine our procedures and raise standards across all of our gardening services.
